The Gift of a wig

We at Wigs for Heroes believe that anyone facing cancer related hair loss should have access to a wig or hair covering. No matter the diagnosis, it should not stop you feeling like you.

The first step in getting your wig should be via your oncology team. They will be able to prescribe you a wig prescription which will allow you to process at an NHS approved hair loss clinic,

Who is entitled to a free wig and fabric support according to the nhs?

You can get free wigs and fabric support from the NHS if you are:

  • under 16

  • 16-18 and in full-time education

  • a hospital inpatient

  • a war pensioner and the wig or fabric support is for your accepted disablement and you have a valid war pension exemption certificate

You can also get free wigs and fabric support if you or your partner – including civil partner – receive, or you're under the age of 20 and the dependant of someone receiving:

You can also get free wigs and fabric support if you're entitled to or named on:

  • a valid NHS tax credit exemption certificate – if you do not have a certificate, you can show your award notice; you qualify if you get Child Tax Credits, Working Tax Credits with a disability element (or both), and have income for tax credit purposes of £15,276 or less

  • a valid NHS certificate for full help with health costs (HC2) – people named on an NHS certificate for partial help with health costs (HC3) may also get help

Having a cancer diagnosis means incurring additional expenses, parking charges, cost of household bills, being out of work due to your illness that paired with the cost of living crisis, we get it, We’ve been there and we appreciate that not everyone will have the means of paying for their prescription or any ‘top ups - if you decide to go for a wig not in the NHS prescription bracket - but we are here to support you. With no judgement and no means testing.

If you are a cancer patient being treated at North Middlesex University Hospital and you are seeking a grant for a wig, please fill your details in enquiry form below and we will be in touch with details regarding the next steps of this process.

Due to limited staffing, we aim to get back to you within 3-5 working days.

If you are not being treated at North Middlesex Hospital, sadly we will not be able to support you with a grant at this time, however, if you join us a member today, you can request a pre loved wig from our Gifting Opportunities section (subject to availability).
