Eli Maddock raises over £800 for Wigs for Heroes in memory of Sukhy
Eli Maddock climbing Ben Nevis
31st July 2025
In June, our community witnessed a moving act of remembrance and resilience. Eli Maddock—who has been cancer-free since May—took on the challenge of climbing Ben Nevis to honour our dear friend and Wigs for Heroes supporter, Sukhy, who passed away earlier this year after her own battle with cancer.
Through her efforts, Eli raised £840, generously donating the full amount to Wigs for Heroes, a charity that Sukhy had championed with passion.
“When the heartbreaking news of her passing was shared on Instagram, her family suggested donating to Wigs for Heroes in her honour. I knew then that I wanted to do something meaningful to celebrate her magical spirit, and this fundraiser felt like the least I could do,” Eli shared.
Eli’s connection to the charity runs deep. Diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer five years ago, she became a Wigs for Heroes supporter herself—leading headwrap tutorials to help others facing hair loss during chemotherapy. It was during this time she met Sukhy, a friendship that quickly blossomed.
“Sukhy and I first connected online after we were both diagnosed with breast cancer, and the bond we formed was instant. From that moment on, she became a big part of my healing journey and left a lasting imprint on my life,” Eli said.
In May 2025, Eli celebrated five years cancer-free—an incredible milestone that, by the end of this year, will mark the end of her remission. But the long-term effects of cancer treatment—especially the chemically-induced menopause which affects joint pain— make any hike a challenge. Tackling Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak at 1,345 metres, was no small feat.
“It was an honour to take on this hike for Sukhy,” Eli reflected. “She is deeply missed, but her light and legacy continue to shine through all of us who were lucky enough to know her.”
Thank you, Eli, for your strength, generosity, and for shining a bright light on Sukhy’s enduring legacy through your remarkable journey.

Wigs for Heroes Honoured at Buckingham Palace
We are proud to share that Wigs for Heroes received special recognition at Buckingham Palace this May, as part of a celebration of community-based cancer initiatives.
Our founder, Kaz Foncette was invited to attend a prestigious reception hosted by The King and Queen, alongside representatives from Their Majesties’ patronages, including Macmillan Cancer Support, Breast Cancer Now, Maggie’s and Children’s Hospice South West.
The event spotlighted organisations making a meaningful impact in the lives of those affected by cancer. In a moment of immense pride, Wigs for Heroes was selected as one of only four charities granted the honour of exhibiting our work inside the Palace. Our stand, presented by two of our incredible volunteers, Sam and Zara, showcased the vital support we provide to individuals navigating cancer treatment, helping them feel seen, empowered, and cared for during such a vulnerable time.
Reflecting on the impact of a cancer diagnosis, The King said:
“Each diagnosis, each new case, will be a daunting and at times frightening experience for those individuals and their loved ones. But as one among those statistics myself, I can vouch for the fact that it can also be an experience that brings into sharp focus the very best of humanity.”
It has certainly given me an even deeper appreciation of the extraordinary work undertaken by the remarkable organisations and individuals gathered here this evening, many of whom I have known, visited and supported over the years. And it has reinforced what I have long observed during these visits - that the darkest moments of illness can be illuminated by the greatest compassion.”
This prestigious recognition from Buckingham Palace has strengthened our commitment to building a supportive community for those facing such isolating times. We are incredibly grateful for this honour and remain dedicated to offering strength, confidence, and dignity to those who need it most.

Wigs for Heroes funds scalp cooling equipment to help save hair from chemo
1st November 2022
Cancer patients receiving chemotherapy at North Middlesex University Hospital (North Mid) now have even more access to a treatment to manage their hair loss thanks to a generous purchase of scalp cooling equipment by local charity, Wigs for Heroes.
Scalp cooling is a treatment that can help to reduce hair loss during chemotherapy, providing cancer patients with the only real alternative to this devastating side effect.
Chemotherapy-induced hair loss is widely recognised as one of the most traumatic side effects associated with cancer treatment which can have significant emotional impact on many patients.
In 2019, Kaz Foncette, founder of Wigs for Heroes, was the first patient to benefit from scalp cooling treatment at the hospital, thanks to the donation of Paxman Scalp Cooling equipment by the breast cancer charity, Future Dreams.
Fuelled by her desire to help others Kaz sought to fundraise to purchase a second Paxman machine to ensure that even more people can retain a sense of self and normality during this challenging part of their lives.
The fundraising efforts generated sufficient funds to purchase two additional pieces of Paxman equipment, thanks to Nilima Shah and her family and friends, who experienced cancer treatment and the benefits of scalp cooling herself during the Covid-19 pandemic.
